Manu vs Middlesbrough: New years eve just got better

Manchester United have a chance to secure their sixth successive win against Middlesbrough on New Year’s Eve.

Convincing victories over Zorya Luhansk, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland resemble something of a resurgence from Jose Mourinho’s men after a muted start.

Their most recent success, a 3-1 win over Sunderland, was hallmarked by a sensational Henrikh Mkhitaryan scorpion kick, who once again demonstrated his worth with another scintillating cameo from the bench.

With that in mind, here is a potential XI for the game with Middlesbrough with Mkhitaryan, now back from injury, restored to the starting XI.

The Armenian, since ending his two month absence from the first team in late November, has quickly established himself as the side’s most important creative instrument. He doesn’t just breathe innovation and panache into attacking displays; his presence ensures that Jose Mourinho’s men remain on the front foot, without fail, until their opponents are soundly derailed.

Anthony Martial hasn’t featured in the starting XI since Man United’s 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison Park, and with a visit to West Ham United lingering on the horizon, Mourinho may be tempted to rest Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata, handing the confidence-sapped Frenchman a chance to impress instead.
